STC Education Committee Year-End Report 1999-2000

1999-2000 was an eventful and fruitful year for the Education Committee. Topping the
list was the sponsorship of a successful progression on educational outreach at the
47th International Conference in Orlando.Another key accomplishment was the 4th
Annual Central Florida High School Technical Writing Competition, which was marked
by both an increase in entries and by the first entries from Brevard.The Pellegrin
Memorial Scholarship Fund continued to prosper, and UCF graduate and undergraduate
scholarships were awarded.
Supported 47th International Conference in Orlando |

- Sponsored successful progression on
educational outreach and published paper in Proceedings (see below).
- Participated in panel discussion of
Special Needs Committee; made presentation and published paper in Proceedings.
- Led panel discussion on integrated strategic
communication sponsored by Lockheed Martin; published paper in Proceedings
(with W.C. Wiese).

- Printed 1,000 copies of informational flyer.
- Distributed flyers at 47th International Conference.
- Mailed flyers to Melissa's family, friends, and co-workers.
- Received a $500 contribution from a former scholarship recipient who said it was "time
to give back" what she had received.

- Submitted a $10K grant proposal to the
Society to fund development of a turnkey PowerPoint tutorial on the principles
of technical communication (decision was delayed until Fall '00).
- Sponsored progression on
educational outreach at 47th Annual International Conference
- Published article in
Proceedings to 47th Annual International Conference, entitled "Reaching Out:
How an STC Chapter Can Support Education in its Community and Professional
Development for its Membership".
Fourth Annual Central Florida High School Technical Writing Competition |

with their parents and faculty sponsors, to the May 2000 chapter meeting to receive
their awards. Three high school students and six family members attended.

Fifth Annual Central Florida High School Technical Writing Competition |

- Opened up competition to any high school student in Florida and added ninth grade.
- Updated cover letter for mailout to high school instructors in 5 counties.
- Acquired and leveraged local zip code
addressees off mailing list from the National Science Teachers Association's
Conference in Florida, added private schools, and added Osceola schools-nearly
doubling this year's mailing as compared to 1999.
- Updated Web site.
- Updated competition flyer, detailed guidelines, and application form.

- Committee member Gail Lippincott served as
the Committee's Publicity Manager (not to mention Chapter Vice President!).
- Sent out press releases on Spring '00

Professional Development of Chapter Members |

- Sponsored 2 days of FrameMaker training,
offering substantial discounts to Chapter members (gained 6 new members and 2
renewals in the process).
- Participated in August 1999 chapter meeting
to share professional enrichment from the 46th Annual International
STC Conference in Cincinnati, using the traditional potpourri format ("Washlines V").
- Posted notes from the 46th Annual
International Conference to the Education Committee Web page.
Other Accomplishments |

- Coordinated development and inception of STC Orlando listserv.
- Added 4 new committee members in July 2000 (and lost one to the Lone Star Chapter!).
- Provided judging support to the Seminole County Math, Science, and Engineering Fair.
Individual Recognition |

- Dan Jones was named a Fellow within
the Society and was recognized at the conference in Orlando.
- Dick Hughes was named an Associate
Fellow within the Society and was recognized at the conference in Orlando.
- Gail Lippincott earned her Ph.D. in
Technical Communication and accepted a position on the faculty at the University of
North Texas.
- Dan Voss earned Excellence Awards in
the 1999 Florida Technical Communications Competition for in the Technical Report and
Promotional Brochure categories for Manufacturing Science and Technology Advanced
Composite Structures Final Report and "Target Sight System for the Cobra
Helicopter," respectively.
