Central Florida High School Students Dominate
International Technical Writing Competition
Central Florida high school sophomores captured four of the five top awards
in the Society for Technical Communication's annual international high school
technical writing competition, the STC Orlando Chapter has reported.
The winners were Eric First, Andrew Lai, and Alexia Ash of Winter Springs High,
and Bonnie Li of Lake Brantley High, whose papers earlier won the top four places in
STC's 7th Annual Florida High School Technical Writing Competition, qualifying
them to compete at the international level.
First's essay Augmented Reality: A Vision of the Future, took second place
(Excellence award) in the international contest, and Lai's Miscommunication:
The Role of Cell Cycle Regulators in the Development of Cancer,
finished third (Merit). Ash and Li brought home 4th and 5th place
(Honorable Mentions) for The Evolution of Computer Control and The
Science Behind Photography, respectively.
Only Houston was able to break Central Florida's domination, as a Texas
student earned first prize (Distinguished award).
Historically, Central Florida students have shown well in the international
competition, including a 1-3-5 finish in 2000. Over a 7-year period, they
have earned 82 awards and $5,125 in cash prizes from STC for their writing
prowess. A complete listing of the
award winners, including the titles of their essays, is available at
