Local Students Capture 3 of 4 Top Places in STC Contest
Winter Springs High School Students Win Awards
In International Technical Writing Competition
Over the past 9 years, Central Florida High School students have won 124 awards and $7,850 in cash prizes in STC
writing competitions.
Two Winter Springs High School students captured awards in the Society for Technical Communication's annual
international high school technical writing competition, the STC Orlando Chapter has reported, continuing Central Florida's
strong history in the event.
Andrew First, a junior, won first place in the 2005 International Technical Writing
Competition, which is sponsored annually by the Society for Technical Communication. First's research essay on OLEDs:
The Displays of the Future earned him a $1000 scholarship.
Andrew Lai, a senior, won third place in the international competition with his
paper on Epigenetics: The Hidden Potential Beyond Coding DNA and received a $300 scholarship.
Jeremy Hsu, a junior, won honorable mention in the international competition with his
paper on Angiogenesis: Cancer's Lifeline and received a certificate.
In last year's STC international high school technical writing competition, First won an Excellence award, and
Lai received an Honorable Mention.
Historically, Central Florida students have shown well in the international competition, including 1st and 3rd in 2001,
2nd and 3rd in 2003, and 2nd in 2004.
Over a 9-year period, they have earned 129 awards and $7,900 in cash prizes from STC for their writing
