Orlando Chapter Requests Nominations for the
Second Annual Gloria Jaffe Outstanding Technical Communicator Award

The Orlando Chapter of STC is pleased to request nominations for the 2004 Jaffe Award, which will be presented next January to the Florida organization that employs the state's outstanding technical communicator.

In addition, an individual award winner and two runners-up will be selected based on their full-time pursuit of technical communication responsibilities; attainment of highly significant business objectives; and unique contributions during product development, during product marketing, or through the achievement of high user satisfaction. Nominations are due by November 7, 2003.

Last year's award was won by Molly Townsend, Supervisor of Fixed Wing Communications at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control - Orlando. Linda Mathis, Technical Publications & Training Manager for Comtech Systems, Inc. in Orlando, and Christina Payne, a technical writer with Lockheed Martin Enterprise Information Systems in Orlando, were runners-up.

Last year, nominations were restricted to Central Florida. This year, the Jaffe Award search is expanding. Recognizing the need for statewide recognition of outstanding members of the profession, Jaffe Award Competition Manager Alicia Fellure has encouraged nominations for technical communicators throughout the state.

The Jaffe Award is named for Orlando Chapter founder and retired University of Central Florida Technical Communication professor Gloria Jaffe. Her leadership is reflected in the enduring communication values prized by the Orlando Chapter and in the professionalism of UCF graduates who had the opportunity to study with her.

If you are an accomplished member of the technical communication profession, or know someone who should be considered, please fill out and submit the application in the nomination brochure. Or feel free to pass this opportunity along within your organization or to your clients.

During the judging process, commencing after nominations are received, entrants will be required to answer the following questions by December 14, 2003:

  1. What have you done to improve the role of the technical communicator within your business?
  2. How have you contributed to the success of your business/company through technical communications?
  3. What do you consider your most significant achievement as a technical communicator?
  4. Is there a specific event or project that has defined your career?
  5. Why did you choose your profession?
  6. How do you contribute to the Society for Technical Communication?
  7. What makes you an effective technical communicator?
  8. How do you implement quality in your business/company?
  9. Describe some your contributions in the following areas:
    1. Business
    2. Education
    3. Leadership

The judging team will review both the information sent in by nominating managers and the responses of the nominees to determine the Jaffe Award winners.

Are you doing outstanding work in technical communication?
Let us know by November 7th!
