Notes from 55th International STC Conference
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, June 1-4, 2008
Preparing Your First Classes for Adult Learners in Various Professions
Tabletop presentation within Academic SIG progression,
“Teaching Outside Academe: Addressing Business Opportunities and Challenges”
Dan Voss
Voss is a Communications manager at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control in Orlando, Florida. He is an
STC Fellow, immediate past manager of STC’s AccessAbility SIG, and a member of the Academic SIG that sponsored
this progression. He has taught numerous courses within the in-service education department at Lockheed Martin,
and he has also taught as an adjunct instructor at several colleges and universities.
Session Description:
The presenter differentiated between pedagogy (teaching children) and andragogy (teaching adults), using
Malcolm Knowles’ principles, along with examples of how these principles can be applied both in in-service
education within the corporate environment and in adjunct instruction at colleges and universities.
Note: Since I was the presenter for this session, I obviously did not take notes. However, here are links
to the presentation and to tips on effective andragogy. For copies of the other handouts, including course
descriptions and syllabi, contact Dan Voss.
